Two Surrey detectives who dealt with sex abuse allegations against Jimmy Savile are being investigated.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said a detective constable and retired detective inspector were under scrutiny.

They were involved in Surrey Police's inquiry into claims Savile abused girls at Duncroft School in the 1970s.

The IPCC will examine whether the officers passed information to "other forces in a timely way".

'Conduct investigation'

In a statement, the police watchdog said: "The IPCC's independent investigation is now into the conduct of two Surrey Police officers who were involved in the police investigation into allegations of sexual abuse by Jimmy Savile at Duncroft School in the 1970s.

"In addition to a retired detective inspector, a detective constable is now also subject to the investigation.

"The conduct investigation includes whether information was passed to other forces in a timely way.

"The inclusion of the second officer in the investigation follows a direction from the IPCC to the force to refer their conduct."

Surrey Police confirmed a retired officer and a serving officer were being investigated.

The force questioned Savile in 2009 over allegations of child sex abuse at Duncroft Approved School in Staines during the 1970s.

He denied the claims and the matter was referred to the Crown Prosecution Service, which advised there was insufficient evidence to take further action.

In October last year, Surrey Police revealed it had interviewed more than 100 former pupils of the school, which closed in the 1980s.

The former presenter of BBC's Top Of The Pops and Jim'll Fix It, who also worked as a Radio 1 DJ and received a knighthood in 1990, died aged 84 in October 2011 - a year before allegations against him emerged in an ITV documentary.

A total of 214 sex offences have been recorded against Savile across the UK.
