Surrey hospital trusts merger gets competition clearance

  • Published

A planned merger between two Surrey hospital trusts has been given final clearance by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).

In its final report, external, the CMA said merging Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals and the Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust would not "substantially lessen" competition.

The trusts announced in May 2014 they were working on the proposal.

The earliest date it can come into effect would be the summer of 2016.

In a joint statement, the trusts said the "unconditional clearance" by the CMA was an "important milestone" for the merger.

The CMA provisionally cleared the proposal in August.

The merger is still subject to the approval of both hospital boards.
