Queen meets four-legged patients as she opens £45m vet school

The Queen opened the £45m veterinary school in Guildford on Thursday

The Queen met several four-legged patients and a puppet from the War Horse show when she officially opened a £45m veterinary school in Surrey.

Her Majesty, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, toured the new University of Surrey facility on Thursday.

Students and members of the public waved flags and took photos as she walked round the Guildford campus.

The Queen spoke to veterinary students and met dogs that had benefited from prosthetic limb surgery.

'World-class institution'

She also met Prof Noel Fitzpatrick, who carries out the pioneering procedures and is the focus of the Channel 4 show The Supervet.

Vice-chancellor, Prof Michael Kearney, said: "We are hugely honoured to welcome Her Majesty and His Royal Highness to the University of Surrey.

"The School of Veterinary Medicine further cements our position as a world-class institution that is delivering cutting-edge teaching and research from state-of-the-art facilities.

"It will not only provide the next generation of sought-after veterinary graduates, but it will offer significant opportunities for collaboration between human and animal medical science professionals and public sector organisations."
