A total of 76 warm welcome venues are available in Surrey in libraries, leisure centres and church halls

Community spaces for people struggling to keep warm due to high energy bills have been opened for a second winter across Surrey.

Surrey County Council said a total of 76 locations, now known as warm welcome venues, were available.

They have been opened in venues such as community and church halls, libraries and leisure centres.

A county council spokesperson said the venues were free of charge and "open to all".

The county council is working on the project with district, borough and town councils as well as faith and community groups.

Some venues will also be offering breakfast and lunchtime clubs, after school clubs for children, and creative activities including board games, toddler toys and knitting.

A number of venues will also be giving out free items such as wheat bags, thermal socks, gloves, electric blankets and flasks.

A county council spokesman said: "Many of our neighbours, friends and families will be forced to make difficult decisions on whether to heat their homes or eat three meals a day.

"Whether you are old or young, live alone or with your family, feel like you are struggling or just managing to get by, a warm welcome awaits you."
