A Surrey library has closed for a second time following the discovery of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (Raac).

Redhill Library closed with immediate effect on Thursday for detailed assessments to take place.

A Surrey County Council spokesperson said further work was needed to ensure the building was safe to reopen.

The library closed on 27 September but reopened the following day after investigations by structural engineers.

A council spokesperson said: "We understand the short notice closure of the library will cause disruption for library users and staff. However, as residents would expect, safety is our top priority."

They said urgent work would be needed before details on mitigation measures or timelines for reopening could be given.

The library is in the same building as the Harlequin Theatre, which also closed in September and moved its Christmas pantomime to a big top in Redhill Memorial Park.

Merstham Library and Reigate Library are open for residents, while a full list of alternative warm spaces can be found on the county council's website.
