A cordon was put in place and 100 homes were evacuated after a gas leak in Ash, Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said.

Fire crews were called to an address in Manfield Road at about 19:30 GMT on Monday.

Police said there were concerns there could be an impact on neighbouring properties and the residents were asked to leave their homes.

The gas supply was isolated and they were allowed to return to their homes shortly afterwards, police said.

Ambulance crews were also called to the scene, a police spokesperson said.

A Surrey Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson: "A smell of gas was emanating from a residential property which upon inspection was from a gas leak."

They said two fire crews had been sent to the scene.

"A cordon was put in place and 100 houses were evacuated to ensure the safety of residents in nearby properties.

"The gas was isolated and after further readings residents returned to their homes."

The fire service said the crews left the scene at about 21:45.
