Haslemere: Sports facility reopens after six-month closure

Clubs are returning to the sports hall at The Edge for the first time since July

A sports facility in Surrey has reopened six months after it closed its doors.

Waverley Borough Council handed back its lease of the sports hall at The Edge, Haslemere, in July.

But an agreement has now been reached with the county council, which owns it, to enable the centre to reopen to clubs for a 12-month period.

The authorities said they were "pleased" to reopen it to community groups outside of school hours.

Surrey County Council will contribute £150,000 to maintain the facility and the borough council £100,000 to support its operations whilst a long-term solution for the building is explored.

The Woolmer Hill Sports Association currently manages the centre.

Councillor Paul Follows, leader of Waverley Borough Council, said: "We have stepped in to offer a short-term solution because we know how important The Edge is to local sports teams, particularly disability groups that are unable to access other facilities.

"Our investment will enable everyone to experience the physical and mental benefits of sport, while allowing Surrey County Council further time to establish a long-term management plan."
