A Surrey hospital has been given an outstanding rating by inspectors who praised staff and engagement with those giving birth.

The Care Quality Commission's report into the Royal Surrey County Hospital, in Guildford, was published on Wednesday.

It gave the hospital and its maternity services the highest possible rating.

The hospital's chief executive said the rating was "testament to the dedication and passion" of staff.

Louise Stead added: "These are two exceptional achievements. The regime for maternity inspections is very detailed and to retain the rating of outstanding is testament to the dedication and passion of our maternity colleagues.

"I would like to thank the whole team for their professionalism and high level of care they give to women and those using our services every single day."

'Innovation was celebrated'

She said getting an overall outstanding rating for the hospital - including its maternity services - was "the cherry on the cake" and that she was "incredibly proud" of all staff.

Inspectors said: "Leaders at all levels demonstrate the high levels of experience, capacity and capability needed to deliver excellent and sustainable care.

"Leaders supported staff to develop their skills. Safe innovation was celebrated."

The hospital trust issued a warning in February about freebirthing, when women choose to give birth without medical assistance.

Trust chair Joss Bigmore said: "Our priority is to provide the best possible care and treatment to patients and receiving these ratings from the Care Quality Commission affirms that.

"It is well deserved recognition for every outstanding member of our Royal Surrey family."

Inspectors highlighted areas to improve including waiting times for reviews by midwives and doctors, and monitoring milk fridge and freezer temperatures.

Between October 2022 and September 2023, 2,977 babies were born at Royal Surrey County Hospital.
