The next full closure of a section of the M25 in Surrey will not take place until after April, National Highways has announced.

A five-mile (8km) stretch along both carriageways between junctions 10 and 11 was closed from Friday until Monday.

National Highways said the next closure will be between junction nine, at Leatherhead, and junction 10, near the A3.

A further three closures are planned before September.

Last week's "unprecedented" closure was the first time there had been a scheduled daytime shutdown of all lanes on the M25 since it opened in 1986.

It was to enable the demolition of Clearmount bridge and the installation of a new gantry, which is now in place.

An 11.5-mile (18.5km) diversion route was created to direct traffic along nearby A roads.

It was the first of five closures and formed part of a £317m upgrade to the motorway.

National Highways said the next closure was not expected "until after April" and will "involve a longer diversion".

The carriageway between junctions nine and 11 carries between 4,000 and 6,000 vehicles per hour in each direction between 10:00 and 21:00 on a weekend, National Highways said.
