Police are stepping up their activity across Sussex during the Christmas and new year period to respond to reports of domestic violence.

Det Sgt Wendy Vodrey said there was a regular increase in incidents throughout the festive season.

She said Boxing Day and New Year's Day were expected to be particularly busy.

Police will work dedicated shifts to tackle domestic abuse from Thursday until 4 January. Officers will have video cameras to gather evidence.

'More alcohol consumed'

Det Sgt Vodrey said domestic abuse was always a priority, but because of the regular increase in incidents, it was vital there were adequate resources to respond to calls for help.

She added: "The increase over this period is often down to higher alcohol consumption, combined with families spending more time than usual with each other.

"Partnerships which are potentially abusive may come to a head at this time."

Officers would be working shifts dedicated to dealing with incidents of domestic abuse, and incidents would be investigated by specialist detectives, she said.

She said police would also be keeping up to date about victims who might be particularly vulnerable and offenders who could pose a higher risk.

Last year, police dealt with 898 alleged domestic incidents from 17 December to 3 January.
