Elderly care cuts in East Sussex 'will not go ahead'

The proposals come as parts of Sussex face severe challenges posed by an ageing population

Planned cuts to social care for elderly people in East Sussex will not have to go ahead, a local authority has said.

East Sussex County Council had proposed stopping payments to those classed as having substantial needs in order to focus on people with critical needs.

But the Conservative-controlled council said it had received an extra £6.9m from the government towards adult social care.

The cabinet will confirm the decision at a meeting on 8 February.

The public sector union, Unison, previously said it had serious concerns about the impact of withdrawing support from vulnerable people.
