A murder investigation has been started after a man in his 50s was found dead in his flat in Brighton.

Sussex Police said officers were called to a property in Gloucester Street at about 0210 BST after the body of the man was found by friends.

The identity of the man has not yet been released. The force said no arrests had been made.

Det Ch Insp Trevor Bowles said: "We are treating his death as murder but the inquiry is in its very early stages."

Police said the man had head injuries and investigators were trying to establish the full circumstances of the death.

"We are not in a position to release any more information at this time," said Mr Bowles.

"However we are keen to hear from anyone who was in or around Gloucester Street in the North Laine area of the city centre in the early hours of this morning and who saw anything suspicious."
