Newhaven Port and Properties hope to build an "eco port for the future"

A plan to rejuvenate a Sussex port has been put forward by its owners.

Newhaven Port and Properties (NPP) wants to build an "eco-port for the future".

The company is also bidding for construction and maintenance of the planned Rampion offshore windfarm, off the coast of Brighton.

Its plan includes the construction of a heavy lifting quay, which would be the only facility of its type on the south coast, it is claimed.

Economic revival

NPP said it was negotiating with Network Rail to restore rail freight to the port and was seeking to attract businesses in the renewable energy field.

The company also hopes to add two additional ferry crossings.

In a statement NPP said: "Historically, the port was a busy industrial port providing employment for many of the inhabitants of Newhaven.

"Sadly it was allowed to decline and many of the old trades and activities are no longer economically viable.

"The renaissance of the port can be the driver for the economic revival of the town and surrounding area."

The company is planning to release more details later.
