An art gallery in Sussex has launched a fundraising appeal to buy two paintings depicting the county's coastline.
The pieces by the 20th Century British artist John Piper show the Newhaven shore and are currently on display at Eastbourne council's Towner gallery.
Towner has already raised £75,000 from the V&A, the Art Fund and the Friends of the Towner, but needs £10,000 more.
The Liberal Democrat-run council said a rare opportunity had arisen to buy the paintings from a London collector.
'Close connection'
Councillor Neil Stanley said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for Towner to acquire two significant pieces of British art to add to our collection here in Eastbourne.
"The opportunity is made even more exciting by their close connection to the town and the artwork we already hold."
He said Towner was currently running an exhibition called John Piper in Kent & Sussex, which includes the two pieces, called The Castle and Newhaven.
"It's the perfect time for visitors to view the pieces on display at the gallery and find out more about the artist," he added.
