Chichester to reduce council CCTV cameras to save money

Chichester will reduce its number of council-run CCTV cameras by more than 20% following a money saving review.

Chichester District Council has voted to retain the CCTV service, but agreed to remove 16 of its 74 cameras.

This will reduce costs by about £17,500 with councillors claiming it will not "adversely affect" the service.

During the review there were suggestions of cutting the service completely. The changes are due to be implemented in April 2012.

John Connor, cabinet member for the environment, said: "We feel that this is the best option to continue operating our CCTV system at a level to keep the district as a safe place to live, work and visit, while saving the council money.

"Sussex Police have also said that 16 cameras could be removed without adversely affecting the service."
