The coxswain at a Sussex lifeboat station has retired, 43 years after joining up as a volunteer crew member.

Peter Huxtable became the coxswain of the Shoreham lifeboat in 1991 and was appointed MBE in 2005.

Mr Huxtable has helped save 449 lives during his time at the station and was awarded two RNLI vellums for rescues in 1980 and 1999.

He said: "It has been a massive part of my life and I will miss it when the adrenaline kicks in."

Steve Smith, who joined the station as a crew member in 1999, takes over as coxswain of the Shoreham lifeboat.
