London 2012: Surrey firms win Olympic and Paralympic deals

The number of Olympic and Paralympic Games-related contracts won by Surrey firms has increased to nearly 300, according to Surrey County Council.

In August 2010, 162 contracts had been signed by Surrey businesses, while new figures show that a total of 295 deals have now been struck.

They include security companies, caterers, construction firms and management consultants.

A council spokesman estimated the contracts were worth more than £740m.

Councillor Denise Saliagopoulos said: "This is great news for Surrey in so many different ways.

"The county's businesses have won more than £740m worth of 2012-related contracts, which is a real boost for the local economy during these tough financial times."

There are still contracts to be won and Surrey County Council has set up business events which highlight the opportunities available to make money from the 2012 Olympics.

A total of 16 Olympic and Paralympic teams have signed up to train in Surrey, including Team GB cyclists and basketball players.
