South Downs walks celebrate national park status

The South Downs became the UK's newest national park in 2010

Celebratory walks have taken place to mark the anniversary of the designation of the South Downs National Park.

The area, which covers more than 600 sq miles of countryside in East and West Sussex and Hampshire, became England's 10th national park on 31 March 2010.

The walks began from Clayton Windmills, West Sussex, Rowlands Castle Station in Hampshire and Birling Gap, East Sussex.

They were organised by the South Downs Society, which was formed to protect the landscape in 1923.

The South Downs stretch for 100 miles from Winchester to Beachy Head.
