Coastguards said large waves made the rescue attempt impossible

The body of a 36-year-old woman who was swept out to sea at Brighton has been found further along the coast.

Joanna Brown, of Ewart Street, Brighton, had not been seen since she ran into the sea from the beach shortly after 02:00 GMT on 21 December.

Her body was discovered by a member of the public on the beach at Cuckmere Haven at 08:00 GMT on 28 December.

Sussex Police only released details of the discovery on Thursday. Her death is not being treated as suspicious.

Coastguard, lifeboat and police teams worked to rescue her and a helicopter was scrambled within minutes of her going in the sea opposite the Digital Club, west of Palace Pier.

Police said she had been with a friend, who had been unable to drag her to safety in the rough sea conditions.
