Brighton sea death: Man dies after rescue attempts

A 29-year-old man has been pronounced dead after a major search off the Brighton coast.

A woman who went into the sea to help the man, off Kings Road Arches at 23:40 GMT on Sunday, managed to get out and raise the alarm.

A major air and sea search co-ordinated by the UK Coastguard involved Sussex Police, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, ambulance, Brighton and Shoreham RNLI lifeboats and a coastguard helicopter.

The search took place east and west of Brighton's Palace Pier. The man was pulled from the water at 01:38 GMT.

He was later pronounced dead at Royal Sussex County Hospital.
