A man has been detained for three years after admitting crashing into and seriously injuring a police officer with a motorbike.

It happened on Paradise Drive in Eastbourne, East Sussex, on 30 July.

Alfie Chandler, 20, previously admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving without valid insurance and driving while disqualified.

He will serve his sentence at a young offenders' institution.

The judge at Kingston Crown Court also disqualified Chandler from driving. He will need to complete an extended driving test on his release.

Sussex Police said that Chandler "narrowly missed one officer but hit another on the arm and leg, causing serious injuries which required surgery".

Officers had been carrying out enquiries nearby in relation to a series of motorbike thefts.

Chandler, of Burlington Close in Feltham, had denied handling stolen goods and the charge was discontinued in court.

Ch Insp Di Lewis from Sussex Police said: "Our officers are here to protect the public, catch criminals, and make our communities a safer place.

"They are not here to be abused, assaulted, or injured, and although this is a risk all emergency workers face, it is not acceptable and should never be considered 'part of the job'.
