Brighton & Hove Albion chairman Tony Bloom has been appointed an MBE in the New Year Honours list.

Mr Bloom, who began the role in 2009, was honoured for services to football and the local community.

Meanwhile, Chichester-based author Kate Mosse has become a CBE for services to literature, women and charity.

Others from East Sussex and West Sussex recognised in the list include conductor Laurence Cummings and charity founder Liam Hackett.

Under the watchful eyes of Mr Bloom, Brighton & Hove Albion finished sixth in the Premier League last season, qualifying for European football for the first time in the club's history.

Ms Mosse said she viewed her CBE as a recognition of the importance of The Women's Prize for Fiction, of which she is a co-founder.

"Quite often those things do get overlooked, not deliberately, but just there isn't a system for them," she said.

"So it does feel that although obviously this is for me, it's very much an acknowledgement of the importance of the Women's Prize, and that it matters that women support other women."

The 62-year-old novelist, whose books have been translated into 38 languages and published in more than 40 countries, is best known for the bestselling Languedoc Trilogy.

Meanwhile, founder of global youth charity and University of Sussex graduate Liam Hackett has been appointed an MBE for services to young people.

Founded in 2012, the charity helps young people through issues including mental wellbeing, bullying, identity, relationships and digital literacy.

Also included on the list are Worthing Football Club owner George Dowell, who has been recognised for services to disability awareness, World Heritage UK President Christopher Blandford, from Uckfield, who has been recognised for services to World Heritage and Stephen Whitton from Burgess Hill, who is head of Border Force Maritime Command and has been appointed an OBE for services to maritime border security.
