The replacement of old metal gas pipes along and around the A24 is expected to last until June

Traffic disruption is expected for several months in a West Sussex town due to gas pipe works.

Replacing old metal gas pipes with new plastic ones begins on Monday along the A24 and surrounding roads in Worthing, and is scheduled to last until June.

Gas company SGN said the work was needed to "provide a safe and efficient gas supply".

A spokesperson said the section being replaced had "a history of gas leaks" and "disruptive emergency works".

Lane closures will be in operation on the A24 around Bohunt School until approximately the beginning of April.

Work will then move on to Sompting Avenue for about 10 weeks.

Bradley Barlow, from SGN, said: "Replacing this pipe we will minimise the risk of future leaks.

"Due to the location of the gas main in the A24, for everyone's safety, we'll need to use a variety of traffic management measures during our work.

"We appreciate it will be disruptive for road users and the local community and we're sorry for the inconvenience these essential works may cause."
