Rail passengers have been told to delay journeys until "much later" in the day after overrunning engineering works caused a main train line to open late.

The line between Brighton and London via Gatwick Airport has now reopened but later than planned.

Trains did not run at the weekend due to the engineering works, with replacement buses and diversionary routes used instead.

But on Monday rail operator Thameslink was telling passengers to delay travel.

Posting on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday morning, external, Thameslink said anyone who travelled would face delays of 60-90 minutes and need to use alternative routes.

Southern and Gatwick Express services are also affected by the overrunning work.

Across the South East, rail services are currently disrupted due to the impact of Storm Isha.
