The A27 Chichester Bypass will be closed in both directions

Drivers are being warned of a weekend closure to the A27 Chichester Bypass as the Portfield project continues.

The bypass will be fully closed between the Bognor and Portfield roundabouts from 20:00 GMT Friday until 06:00 Monday 11 March.

National Highways said the weekend closure was necessary to install a new footbridge.

Flooding from local drains between Portfield and Boxgrave could disrupt the work, National Highways warned.

If it goes ahead as planned, the closure will mean drivers to Chichester will be diverted via the A259, A286 and A285.

For traffic going west or east, National Highways has asked drivers to follow the diversion via the A259 and A284.

A spokesperson for National Highways said: "The closure this weekend is to facilitate the installation of a new footbridge over the A27.

"This bridge is part of the highway safety improvement works associated with the Shopwhyke lakes development and will enhance the pedestrian and cycle connectivity across the A27."

National Highways said it was currently working with Southern Water to clear the flooding that caused closures to the A27 and may need to cancel the planned work "to help traffic move smoothly around the area."
