Teesside exhibition celebrates Cook's Reef travels

A new exhibition celebrating 240 years since Captain James Cook landed in Australia is to open later this month.

The explorer discovered the east coast of Australia when his ship ran aground at the Great Barrier Reef in 1770.

The exhibition at Middlesbrough's James Cook Birthplace Museum will feature items brought back from his Barrier Reef travels.

It is called Smoke Near the Beach because Captain Cook describes seeing the Aboriginal fires in his journal.

It runs from 11 September to 10 November.
