Plans to upgrade a landmark bridge on Teesside in time for its 100th birthday have been unveiled.

Middlesbrough's Transporter Bridge celebrates its centenary on 17 October and an overhaul of the Grade II-listed structure is planned.

The plans include installing a glass lift allowing visitors to experience trips to the top of the bridge.

Middlesbrough Council is asking people their views on the changes during a two-week consultation.

The 225ft (69m) high bridge is one of Teesside's most recognisable landmarks and is seen as a symbol of the area's industrial heritage.

It links Middlesbrough and Port Clarence over the River Tees.

Iconic symbol

Last year the structure was closed to undergo work to replace its century-old motors.

Councillor Paul Thompson, Middlesbrough Council's executive member for transport, said: "The Transporter Bridge is an iconic symbol on the Teesside skyline and a great tourist attraction for the whole region."

Improvements to the walkway and disabled access are also planned.

The plans for the bridge are on display at the Transporter Bridge Visitor Centre until 4 February.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has contributed £110,000 towards the project.
