A water-powered cliff lift has reopened to the public after a £30,000 refit.

The Victorian funicular at Saltburn opened in June 1884 to transport people from the town's pier up the steep incline to the top of the cliff.

The carriages were removed in November last year for their first off-site overhaul since 1992.

The lift, which now has a new intercom which allows the driver to talk to passengers, was back in service on Friday.

Redcar and Cleveland Council paid for the work to be completed.

The lift links Saltburn Pier with the town and is a popular tourist attraction.
