Darlington lollipop jobs could become voluntary positions

Darlington Borough Council is considering making its lollipop men and women voluntary positions to save £300,000 over the next three years.

A supervisor position and 36 school crossing wardens have been sent letters by the council to say they are reviewing the service.

Earlier this month, the council announced proposals aimed at saving £11m in its budget saving proposals.

Darlington Council said it was not making anyone redundant.

A council spokesperson said: "None of the school crossing patrol staff have been put on notice of redundancy, we are planning to undertake a review of the service.

"School crossing patrols are very important to us. However, they are not a service required to be delivered by law and as such are vulnerable when making decisions."
