Human remains have been found on farmland in Middlesbrough, police said.

Officers were called to land close to Newham Hall Farm, near Coulby Newham, on Wednesday evening.

Police said they were contacting "specific families" to inform them of the find but had not yet established whether the remains were those of a male or female.

A spokeswoman said it "may take some time" to assess how old the remains were.

She said: "At this stage it is too early to give an indication of how old the bones may be, until they have been thoroughly and forensically examined it is difficult to place an exact age on them."
