Redcar's sea flood defence work completed

A concrete flood defence wall built to protect more than 1,000 homes has been completed.

Redcar's new wall, which stretches for 2.7km (1.6 miles) from Coatham to The Stray, is also intended to reduce coastal erosion.

The defences are part of a £30m regeneration scheme for the town.

A set of steps to reduce wave energy has also been built along the Esplanade as well as a curved wall designed to bounce waves back into the sea.

The work has been completed by the Environment Agency and Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.

James Mead, project manager at the Environment Agency, said: "The Redcar scheme will provide some much-improved flood protection to businesses and residents, and it will also help reduce coastal erosion.

"Working with the council, we have taken this opportunity to create an entirely new seafront promenade, including shelters and water features, that will be complete within the next few months."
