New Middlehaven plans go on show in Middlesbrough

The refined plan includes 750 new homes

Updated plans for a major regeneration scheme on Teesside have gone on show.

The redevelopment of the Middlehaven area of Middlesbrough has been refined after the original plan was hit by the recession.

Fewer houses will now be built on the 42 hectare (105 acre) site close to the River Tees. A road bridge will be built over the dock under the new plans.

More than £140m has already been spent on the revamp. A public consultation will run until 17 June.

The plans can be viewed at the civic centre, central library and the Myplace youth centre. Proposals include the creation of a new park, close to the Transporter Bridge.

Middlehaven is home to Middlesbrough College and the town's Boho Zone, where dozens of creative businesses are based.

A rehabilitation centre for people with neurological conditions is expected to open later this year.

Councillor Charlie Rooney, executive member for regeneration, said there was "real momentum" behind the scheme.

The council's main development partner pulled out of Middlehaven in 2011.
