Middlesbrough's Transporter Bridge is to remain closed until spring for renovation and painting work.

The council said the further extension - it was originally due to close for 40 days - was due to a higher than anticipated amount of preparation work.

A replacement bus service will continue to operate between Middlesbrough and Port Clarence.

Work started at the end of August on the £2.6m Heritage Lottery Fund-supported project.

It aims to transform the Grade II-listed structure into a top tourist attraction.

Councillor Nicky Walker said: "I would once again apologise to users of the Tees Transporter Bridge for any inconvenience and thank them for their patience and understanding.

"I am sure the renovations and upgrades will prove popular with regular users and visitors alike, and will further cement the Transporter's reputation as a landmark of national importance."
