A body has been found in a river in County Durham by police searching for a missing 14-year-old.

Emergency services were called to Paradise Park near Bishop Auckland on Sunday evening after reports of people in difficulty in the River Wear.

Some of the group were rescued but teenager Cameron Gosling, of Crook, was unaccounted for.

Following a search by police, the fire service and a fell rescue team his body was recovered just before midnight.

Durham Police is warning people about the dangers of swimming in open waters.

'Absolute tragedy'

Ch Insp Sue Robinson said: "No doubt yesterday the river would have looked still and calm, it was a very hot day, I'm sure the appeal for going for a cool swim was very enticing.

"However what people don't understand is what's happening under the water and what can appear calm can have very strong under currents.

"I'd stress to everybody of all ages this summer keep yourself safe and under no circumstances enter open waters."

Cameron was a pupil at Parkside Academy, Willington, which said in a statement the school community was devastated at the tragic loss.

"He was a popular boy, full of high spirits and fun, and well-liked by both pupils and staff, and it is an absolute tragedy to lose such a lovely boy on the very cusp of adulthood," the statement said.

"Our thoughts today are very much with Cameron's parents, brothers and wider family."
