Highways England want cyclists to user safer alternative routes on local roads and cycle routes

Cyclists are being banned from a section of the A19 on Teesside that has been described as "vulnerable" in a bid to prevent accidents.

Highways England have put up signs on an eight mile (13km) stretch between Parkway and Wolviston banning cyclists from using the road.

It said that section has a mixture of two, three and four lanes, and a number of slip roads making it unsafe.

Cleveland Police said it hoped the ban would stop "unnecessary deaths".

It is hoped the signs will encourage people to use safer alternative routes on local roads and dedicated off-road cycle routes.

The scheme is supported by Cleveland Police, Middlesbrough Council and Stockton Council.
