A man and a teenager were stabbed in an attack at an Indian restaurant, police said.
The stabbing happened at the Shapla Tandoori in Northgate, Darlington, at about 20:20 BST on Thursday.
Durham Police described the attack, which left the 17-year-old with serious abdominal injuries, as "shocking."
A spokesman said a 43-year-old local man had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
'Serious but stable'
The two victims and alleged attacker were "either staff at the restaurant or connected to the restaurant", the force said. They were not customers.
The teenager is being treated at Darlington Memorial Hospital, where his condition is described as "serious but stable."
The other man, aged 39, was also taken to hospital where he was treated for injuries to his arm.
Det Insp Dave Ashton said: "This was a shocking incident which took place in a restaurant which was open to the public at a peak time.
"With this in mind I am keen to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything at the time of the incident.
"We are treating this very much as an isolated incident and scene preservation remains in place to allow for forensic examination."
