A Festival of Thrift could help those affected by the end of steel making on Teesside, its founder has said.

The event, now in its fourth year, is taking place over the weekend at Kirkleatham Museum, in Redcar.

Visitors can learn money-saving skills, find out more about recycling, and sample food and crafts.

Some of the small businesses taking part have been set up by workers made redundant by the closure of the town's SSI steel plant.

More than 2,000 people lost their jobs in October when its Thai-based owners went into liquidation.

The festival, which in previous years took place in Darlington, was the brainchild of designer Wayne Hemingway.

He said: "It is apt that we are doing it in Redcar.

"One of the things about this event is that they're nearly all business start ups.

"There are people here who worked in the steel industry who will be here selling things and trying things out."
