Work to fix Middlesbrough station's crumbling roof is to get under way, Network Rail has confirmed.
The company said the work on the Grade II-listed building would cost about £2.7m and take up to 18 months to complete but that train services would continue running.
Middlesbrough Council said it hoped the station would regenerate the area and attract more businesses.
More than 1.3m passengers use the station every year.
Deputy mayor and representative for regeneration, Councillor Charlie Rooney, said: "We've got offices coming to the town and we want more people here.
"The area around the station is vitally important - some of its already been refurbished and we offering grants to businesses to kick-start regeneration."
In 2020 the first direct service to King's Cross will run from Middlesbrough.
