A woman has been jailed for life for stabbing her elder sister on Good Friday this year.

Marie Metcalfe, 41, attacked Laura Metcalfe on the evening of 2 April in Brougham Terrace, Hartlepool.

The 44-year-old was taken to hospital but died from her injuries several days later.

Marie Metcalfe, of Brougham Terrace, was told she would serve a minimum term of 18 years in prison after pleading guilty at Teesside Crown Court.

She had been due to stand trial on Monday but changed her plea.

Speaking after the sentencing, Det Ch Insp Simone Bennett from Cleveland Police said the murder had had "devastating and long-lasting effects" on the family and the local community.

"Yesterday Marie Metcalfe pleaded guilty to her sister's murder and therefore there was no trial which would have added to the family's stress and trauma," she said.

"The sentence passed today reflects the serious nature of the crime and its effects on Laura's family."

The family said: "The loss of Laura, a much-loved mum, sister, daughter and friend has destroyed our family beyond repair.

"We will never forget her and will love and miss her forever."
