Yarm Fair's fairground rides takes over the town's high street

Weather warnings have forced the cancellation of the day's events at a Teesside fair.

The annual Yarm Fair got under way on Thursday but organisers announced it would be closed on Friday due to the "extreme weather forecast".

The Showmen's Guild said it had made the "difficult decision" in the interest of public safety.

An amber warning for rain has been issued for parts of northern England and the Midlands.

It is in place from 12:00 BST on Friday to 06:00 BST on Saturday as Storm Babet batters the country.

A spokesman for the Showmen's Guild said it was hopeful the fair, held on Yarm's high street, would operate as planned on Saturday.

It includes fairground rides such as dodgems and waltzers, along with a big wheel and a helter skelter.

Stockton Council said Friday's cancellation meant scheduled road closures would no longer be in place.
