Christmas card appeal for heart transplant girl Evie Green

Evie's mum says she is "loving" the cards and "it's making her day receiving the post"

A four-year-old girl waiting for a heart transplant has received dozens of Christmas cards from strangers to brighten up her hospital walls.

Evie Green, from Middlesbrough, has dilated cardiomyopathy and is currently in Newcastle's Freeman Hospital.

Her mum Chloe said people were asking if they could get Evie presents and recommended cards because "she loves making and opening them".

Evie's family have been campaigning to raise awareness of organ donation.

Evie's condition affects the heart's ability to pump blood around the body.

On 10 March Evie was moved into a paediatric intensive care unit to bring a skin infection under control.

However, her health deteriorated and the next day she had open heart surgery.

During the operation her heart stopped for two minutes, but the team managed to bring her back.

Doctors made a national callout to see if there was a heart donor available, but there was none.

Evie is on the transplant list and will not leave hospital until a heart is found

She has had to have a Berlin Heart device fitted, which can be used to support children in severe heart failure, either until recovery or until a heart transplant is possible.

Chloe, 28, posted on social media: "Evie is loving the cards she has received so far.

"It really does mean so much to our family these smiles."
