A "medical episode" led to a four-vehicle crash that killed a 70-year-old man, police say.

Five others were injured in the crash on Middlesbrough's A66 Hartington slip road on Wednesday morning.

Attempts were made at the scene to save the victim, who was in a van which was in collision with a taxi and two cars.

An air ambulance and fire crews were among the emergency responders, helping cut one person from a vehicle and take three of the injured to hospital.

A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police, external said the 70-year-old was travelling in the van with a 44-year-old man who sustained a leg injury.

Two women, aged 18 and 25, who were in separate cars sustained minor injuries, as did a 22-year-old taxi driver and his 55-year-old female passenger.
