Additional trains are being laid on for spectators and participants in one of the world's most famous half-marathons.

Up to 54,000 people are expected to take part in the Great North Run on 19 September.

The event, now in its 30th year, raises millions of pounds for charity and also attracts thousands of spectators.

Train operator East Coast will be running extra services from stations in Yorkshire and County Durham to Newcastle on the morning of the race.

The first will leave Leeds at 0605 BST and call at Wakefield, Doncaster, York, Northallerton, Darlington and Durham.

East Coast commercial director Peter Williams said: "We are providing these additional trains to make things a little easier for runners and their supporters to get to this fantastic event.

"They will have enough to think about without worrying about driving and parking and East Coast wishes everyone taking part the best of luck."
