A tourist was rescued by a lifeboat after becoming stuck on rocks by the incoming tide off the Tyneside coast.

Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade and the crew of Cullercoats RNLI inshore lifeboat were alerted by the Coastguard on Friday morning.

They said the man, from Romania, had climbed onto a rock to take a photo of St Mary's Island, Whitley Bay.

The lifeboat crew rescued the man before handing him over to Brigade members. He was shaken but not hurt.
