Thousands of people crowded into Newcastle city centre to welcome in the new year.

The city's Winter Carnival ran throughout the afternoon with dancers and musicians gathering around Grey's Monument.

They then came together for a parade, which included dozens of volunteers from the city, up Northumberland Street towards the Civic Centre.

The finale of the event was a fireworks display.
