Great North Run: Red Arrow pilot Jon Egging's widow to take part

Dr Egging said it would be a very emotional day

The widow of Flt Lt Jon Egging, the pilot killed following a Red Arrow display, is to take part in the Bupa Great North Run.

Dr Emma Egging will also announce the formation of the Jon Egging Trust in memory of her husband, from Rutland.

The Red Arrows will pay tribute to Flt Lt Egging when they fly over the Tyne Bridge in the "missing man" formation at the event in Newcastle on Sunday.

Dr Egging will wear a number four in memory of her husband who flew "Red 4".

'Bowled over'

She will be taking part with Angie James, the partner of "Red 6", and Graham Bagnall, the ground commander of the display team, known as "Red 10".

Together they will announce the formation of the Jon Egging Trust, a charity giving disadvantaged young people the opportunity to experience flying.

Dr Egging said: "I am bowled over by the opportunity to run in memory of Jon, for the Reds and to raise awareness of the trust we are setting up in his name.

"Whilst it will be a very emotional day, I'm looking forward to taking part and then seeing the Reds' display at the finish line."

The Red Arrows will fly over the start line at 10:39 BST and fly over the Tyne Bridge in the "missing man" formation at 11.05.

The traditional display at the finish line in South Shields will take place at 13.15.

Coverage of the run will be live on BBC One from 09:30 BST on Sunday, which will include the Red Arrows' performances.
