Emergency £75m hospital approved for Cramlington

The hospital would treat severe accident and emergency patients

Plans for an emergency care hospital in Northumberland have been given the go-ahead by council planners.

The £75m facility, next to the A19 just outside Cramlington, would treat severe accident and emergency patients.

Northumbria Healthcare Trust said it would be among the first in the UK to have specialist A&E consultants on site 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

There will now be a consultation with the Civil Aviation Authority, as wind turbines are also planned for the site.

It is also subject to final approval from the government.

The move is part of plans to downsize A&E facilities at Northumberland and North Tyneside hospitals by creating one specialist centre.
