Sir Bobby's online auction raises over £200,000 for cancer

An online auction for the late Sir Bobby Robson's charity has raised more than £200,000 to help fight cancer.

The Sir Bobby's Breakthrough Auction, which ended on Sunday, included 188 lots donated by the likes of David Beckham, Ant and Dec and Fabio Capello.

The highest bid was Jose Mourinho's FIFA Ballon D'Or World Coach of the Year Award 2010, which raised £26,000 of the £202,774 total.

Organiser Gina Long, said it had gone "way beyond" her "wildest dreams".

County Durham-born former England boss Sir Bobby, who also managed Newcastle and Ipswich, died in 2009 at the age of 76 after a long battle with cancer.

More than £50,000 of the total was raised at Sir Bobby's Breakthrough Ball and all other funds were raised through the auction which included driving and sporting experiences, sports memorabilia, jewellery, clothing and holidays.

Ms Long said: "This has all been made possible because of the enormous love and respect for Sir Bobby Robson, who I was privileged to call a great friend.

"So many football clubs wanted to do their bit to honour Sir Bobby and the support from auction prize donors, sponsors, individuals, companies and the generous bidders has helped make it a huge success and way beyond our wildest dreams."

The money will be split between Breakthrough Breast Cancer and the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.

So far the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation has raised more than £3.5m.
