Newcastle United said it was "appalled" by the comments made

A 29-year-old man has been charged with two offences under the Malicious Communications Act after reports of a racist comment directed at Newcastle United on Twitter.

Peter Copeland from West Rainton, County Durham is due to appear before Sunderland magistrates on 6 February.

The tweet was made on the social networking site on Tuesday. The account it came from was later deleted.

Newcastle United said it was "appalled" by the comments.
