Arrests after Port Clarence wood recycling fire

  • Published

Three men have been arrested after a severe fire at a wood recycling plant on Teesside.

The blaze broke out on Saturday at the Jigsaw plant in Haverton Hill Road, Port Clarence.

It is now under control, but fire crews remain on the scene and residents have been warned to expect further plumes of smoke as the damping down continues.

The three men, aged in their late teens and early twenties, are being held on suspicion of arson.

Fire officers at the scene have said it could be more than a week before it is fully extinguished.

People have been advised to keep their windows closed and anyone with existing medical problems has been warned to keep out of the path of the smoke wherever possible.

At the height of the fire 10 crews were at the scene, with water being pumped directly out of the River Tees.
